Detects popups, overlays, and full-screen interstitials that block main content on mobile.
This check detects intrusive interstitials — popups, overlays, newsletter gates, app-install prompts, and full-screen banners that cover the main content on mobile devices. It looks for common patterns: fixed/absolute positioned overlays, cookie consent banners that are excessively large, and elements that obscure a significant portion of the viewport.
Google specifically penalizes pages with intrusive interstitials on mobile. Since January 2017, pages where content is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from mobile search results may not rank as highly.
Intrusive interstitials on mobile can directly trigger a Google ranking demotion. Users who encounter full-screen popups immediately after clicking a search result are likely to bounce, further hurting your rankings through poor engagement signals.
